Built For War
The warforged were created as mindless automatons by arcanists of the last Age. During the Age of Suffering, with the birth of the Silver Flame, many of them were awakened and became sentient creations. No one, least of all the artificers who created them, understand how or why this happened. Although they are constructs, they have much in common with living creatures, including emotions, social bonds, and perhaps even souls. Society is easily, and usually, confused by their existence. Are they people or property; living constructs or magical machines; engines of war or is there something more to them? If these questions are difficult for others, they are even more so for the warforged themselves, as they don’t have the answers either.
Warforged bodies are magical constructs of wood, stone, and steel. Hidden in their chest cavity is the center of their being. An orb that houses both mind and spirit. Being approximately human sized, they are generally a bit broader but much heavier than humans.
Awakened Warforged Racial Traits
Ability Score Increase: Strength +1, Constitution +1
Speed: 30 feet
Composite Plating: Your construction incorporates wood and metal, granting you a +1 bonus to Armor Class.
Living Construct: Even though you were constructed, you are a living creature. You are immune to disease. You do not need to eat or breathe, but you can ingest food and drink if you wish. Instead of sleeping, you enter an inactive state for 4 hours each day. You do not dream in this state; you are fully aware of your surroundings and notice approaching enemies and other events as normal.
Modified Form: Many items, particularly weapons, armour, and shields, can be incorporated into the physical structure of the warforged. These items can not be dropped, disarmed, or in any way displaced unless the warforged specifically wills it. You must take either a short or long rest to make these changes.
Mechanical Repair: The warforged will automatically self-repair at a rate equal to a human. You are unaffected by the Medicine skill or the healer’s kit. Although, the same effect is gained from mason’s, smith’s, and tinker’s tools, or the Mending cantrip. However, awakened warforged respond to healing magic the same as any other living creature.
Languages: Common and one other language of your choice.
